This week I hit a deadlift goal of 140kg (that’s 308lb in Freedom Units). 18 months ago I had never lifted weights. I’d been a “cardio enthusiast”, and for many years an office chair and plane seat wizard.

It took me ages to break through 100kg. Now, that is simply the warm up and it feels like nothing at all.

This reminded me of a mentor’s insight, “Often commitment to the strategy is more important than the strategy”. This resonates with Seth Godin‘s book “The Practice” in which Seth argues that too often we focus solely on the outcome and forget the importance of the process.

We need to form habits, and understand the journey is often just as important as the destination.

Process teaches us this, and reinforces both the need and benefit of sticking with something. If all we focus on is the outcome, we rarely achieve our goals.

Learn to love the process and the goals come faster.
